SYNCHRONOUS VS. ASYNCHRONOUS CLASSES

In education, we must always be in tune with the correct lingo.  Then, the ah-ha moment comes when you realize you have been doing some aspect of the task.

Let get a basic understanding of both.

The Synchronous class is when the instructor and student are on line at the same time.  Examples may be chat room, video conferencing, internet radio /podcast etc.

The Asynchronous class is when the instructor and student are not online at the same time.  However, the student is given assignment, tasks, work to complete and submit.  Delivery methods include:  discussion boards, emails, blogs, dvd, social networking, etc.

I have used the Asynchronous class, which in my experience is more suited for the independent learner who can self manage their time.

The Synchronous class is very good to use when you want to monitor student's progress and understanding of the lesson.  It a great tool for formative assessment.
